Rich Remington Park Futurity & Derby Lead Saturday Card Worth More Than $1.5 Million
OKLAHOMA CITY – March 20, 2016 - It will be another high-level presentation of American Quarter Horse racing this weekend at Remington Park. The rich Remington Park Futurity and Derby take place Saturday night, headlining a 12-race program worth total purse money of $1,542,700.
$958,000 Remington Park Futurity
The rich futurity, for eligible Oklahoma-breds, is at its highest purse level since the race became a restricted state-bred event in 2011. Now a restricted Grade 2, the field for the Remington Park Futurity was compiled after 24 heats at 330 yards, over two nights of trials on April 8 & 9.
Teller Baja, the top qualifier on night one of trials, has been made the 5-2 morning-line favorite by odds-maker Jerry Shottenkirk. Undefeated thru two races here this spring, Teller Baja is owned and bred by Juan Medina of Zapata, Texas. Trained by Rick Robinson and ridden by Agustin Silva, Teller Baja won her trial by 1-1/4 lengths.
Major Freight led the qualifiers on the second night of trials. Owned by Dr. Edward Leslie of Frankfort, Ky. and trained by Duke Shults, Major Freight has only had the one trial attempt in his fledgling career. The colt will be ridden by James Flores.

$337,000 Remington Park Derby
After six trials for the 400-yard race on April 10, the always competitive A Tres Of Paint had the top qualifying time of :20.068 seconds. Owned by Sara Morgan of Edmond, Okla. and trained by her brother Duke Shults, A Tres Of Paint made her first derby attempt of the year after qualifying for four futurities as a 2-year-old last year.
An earner of $386,384, A Tres Of Paint’s best futurity finish came in the $1,170,000 Heritage Place Futurity at Remington Park where she was second. A winner of six races from a dozen starts, the 3-year-old will have Ivan Carnero aboard as she seeks her first derby victory. She is the 5-2 morning-line favorite.
Regard With Respect, winner of the Remington Park Futurity last year, made the derby field and is the second morning-line favorite at 4-1 odds. Owned by Nancy Powell of Kinta, Okla. and trained by Guillermo Valdivia, Regard With Respect went on to finish third in the 2015 Heritage Place Futurity, behind the winner BV Midnight Express and A Tres Of Paint. The top earner in the RP Derby, Regard With Respect has accumulated $491,822. Jesus Salazar will have the riding assignment.
