A TRES OF PAINT Wins Remington Park Derby
OKLAHOMA CITY, April 23, 2016 – A regular finalist in futurities a year ago, A Tres Of Paint never managed to finish the job to win one of them. In her first final as a 3-year-old, A Tres Of Paint broke through to win Saturday’s $337,000 Remington Park Derby.
Owned by Sara Leann Morgan of Edmond, Okla. and trained by her brother Duke Shults, A Tres Of Paint started cleanly then began her move to the front under jockey Ivan Carnero as they set their sights on Bye Bye Freighttrain who had the lead.
“She never breaks really sharp,” Carnero noted. “A couple of the inside horses had her for a while but about at 200 yards she just got rolling and kind of cruised by them. I didn’t have to ask much.”
After missing in the Remington Park Futurity, the Heritage Place Futurity, the Rainbow Futurity (Ruidoso Downs, N.M.) and the Texas Classic Futurity (Lone Star Park, Grand Prairie, Texas), A Tres Of Paint had her connections wondering if she would ever close the deal in a final. In her first derby attempt, she took care of business.
“She was always the bridesmaid and never the bride. Today she was finally the bride and we’re tickled to death,” Shults said.
Going on to defeat Bye Byefreighttrain by three-quarters of a length, A Tres Of Paint handled the 400 yards in :19.808 seconds over the fast track. Ferrari James was another neck behind in third place.
The betting favorite at 8-5 odds, A Tres Of Paint paid $5.20 to win, $3.80 to place and $2.40 to show. Bye Byefreighttrain paid $7.80 to place and $4.60 to show. Ferrari James paid $3 to show.
A winner of seven races from 13 attempts, A Tres Of Paint’s derby win was her fifth victory at Remington Park. A 3-year-old filly by Tres Seis from the PYC Paint Your Wagon mare First Painted Sign, A Tres Of Paint was bred in Oklahoma by the Mixer Ranch. The derby winner’s share of $122,800 moves A Tres Of Paint’s career earnings to $509,184.
The rest of the order of finish in the Remington Park Derby: Jess Envision (4th), Brimmies Wagon (5th), Streakin PR (6th), Shaky Hero (7th), Dianas Tres Seis (8th), Regard With Respect (9th) and Rosas Coronas (10th).
