TRAINER MATT WHITEKILLER, JOCKEY CODY SMITH WIN SPEEDHORSE GRAHAM FUTURITY FOR FOURTH TIME

OKLAHOMA CITY - June 1, 2019 – If trainer Matt Whitekiller and jockey Cody Smith spend any more time in the winner’s circle for the Speedhorse Graham Paint and Appaloosa Futurity, they’ll have to pay rent.

They’ve only combined to win this race four times together. They won the Grade 1 $259,400 event again this year, this time withDTL Chasin Tale, owned by DTL Teel Partnership of Skiatook, Okla. They also won the race in 2009 with I Kick (Pt), 2015 with multiple World Champion Painted Turnpike (Pt), and in 2017 with Bully Pulpit (Pt).

DTL Chasin Tale won for the fourth time in a row, also winning the $157,578 Oklahoma Paint & Appaloosa Futurity on March 23, the $20,000 Victoria Ennis Memorial Stakes on April 27 and Saturday night for three stakes wins in only five starts. He is a 2-year-old gelded son of Wagon Tales (QH), out of the SF Royal Quick Flash mare Shez Showin Off. He was bred in Oklahoma by Dean and Tonya Lester. Dean Lester represented ownership in the winner’s circle after the race.

“He was never a problem growing up,” Lester said. “He wasn’t flashy…but he is now.”

Smith did not have an easy decision going into the finals, having qualified the winner in the trials and also the 9-5 second betting favorite Southern Electric, who finished third in the race Saturday.

“It wasn’t an easy decision for sure,” Smith said. “That other horse is an extremely nice horse as well. I won a futurity on him this meet as well (the American Paint Classic). It’s a good problem to have, but it’s not a decision you want to make.”

As the even-money favorite, DTL Chasin Tale broke fourth from the gate and he and the horse just to his inside, Southern Electric, began leaning on each other. The winner finally broke free from that tussle and went on to win by a half-length over runner-up Charlie Rising.

“We didn’t get away from the gate real good but he has so much heart,” said Whitekiller. “He finally got going and showed how good he is.”

DTL Chasin Tale paid $4 to win, $2.80 to place and $2.10 to show. He earned $100,229 for his owners and now stands at $182,606 in his lifetime bankroll from four wins in five starts and a second. Charlie Rising, in second, was three-quarters of a length in front of Southern Electric who finished third.

DTL Chasin Tale stopped the clock for 350 yards over the fast track in 17.813 seconds, good enough for a speed index of 81.

Whitekiller said he would next be seen in the Speedhorse series in Tulsa, Okla., at Fair Meadows. The Speedhorse Graham Futurity is the richest race in the world for Paint and Appaloosa horses.
